Current Research Projects

DFG Lightransport Visualization The goal of this project is to develop means to visualize light transport in virtual as well as real scenes. More information soon!
Crytek Together with Crytek, one of the leading developers of video games, we are developing real-time, high-quality rendering techniques for next generation game engines
COLOR
(with INRIA Nancy)
The goal of this project is to further explore an alternative representation for interactive modeling of shapes: Objects defined as the iso-value of a distance function, rather than defined by triangle meshes. While a lot of work has been already done in this area, the novelty of our approach is to consider all steps of image synthesis, from authoring to the final interactive on-screen rendering. Fraunhofer IOSB This project is funded by the Fraunhofer Institute of Optronics, System Technologies and Image Exploitation (IOSB) and investigates the use of predictive rendering and procedurally modeled objects to simulate optical inspection systems and train image processing algorithms.
Intel VCI The IVCI funds research in efficient light transport simulation with discrete ordinate methods, and analysis and manipulation of light transport for artistic and architectural applications.
RTT AG Cooperation with RTT AG, a leading developer of real-time rendering solutions for the automotive industry and product development.
KIT IEF With help of the KIT International Excellence Fund we are starting a collaboration with LIGUM, University of Montreal.

Recently finished projects:

SimTech Within the Cluster of Excellence „Simulation Technology“ we develop finite element methods for the simultaneous computation of light and sound propagation in complex virtual scenes, and investigate the potential of synergy effects
SFB 627 "Nexus" The Collaborative Research Centre 627 was a joint research project on context-aware applications with regard to the proliferation of sensor technology, along with advances in wireless communication and mobile devices. Billions of sensors located in our physical environment collect a huge amount of context information. However, this information is not always reliable or complete. At this point our research project comes into play: we investigated the synthesis and validation of context information by combining multimodal sensor data with procedural, computer graphics models.
Landesstiftung
Baden-Württemberg
Funding of the Juniorprofessor-Program of the State of Baden-Württemberg enabled us to start research on analyzing and manipulating light transport in virtual scenes.
EU - Scalable Global Illumination The goal of this project is to further explore an alternative representation for interactive modeling of shapes: Objects defined as the iso-value of a distance function, rather than defined by triangle meshes. While a lot of work has been already done in this area, the novelty of our approach is to consider all steps of image synthesis, from authoring to the final interactive on-screen rendering.
